The Problem:
Nurses spend more time documenting care than delivering it.
Bedside nurses in acute care settings face an unrelenting documentation burden. Charting — recording vitals, wound assessments, medication administration, and dozens of discrete clinical observations — happens on desktop EHR systems that weren't designed for the speed or physicality of bedside work.
The result: nurses context-switch constantly between patient and screen, documentation falls behind, and cognitive load compounds across a shift.
CAAM Nursing was built to close that gap — bringing AI-assisted charting to mobile, in the environments where care actually happens.
The Platform
A conversation-forward mobile app. A plugin architecture for clinical AI.
CAAM Nursing is built on Oracle Health's Clinical AI Agent (CAA) — an LLM-powered orchestration engine that interprets clinical intent and routes it to the right specialist agent.
On mobile, this means nurses can interact naturally — through voice, typed input, or camera — and have AI handle the translation into structured clinical data. The nurse stays in control. The agent does the heavy lifting.
The app is designed as a plugin platform: individual agents can be added, evaluated, and deployed without rebuilding the core experience. Today it supports two agents in active use, with more in evaluation.
My Role
End-to-end UX lead. Cross-functional contributor. Framework co-owner.
I lead UX design for CAAM Nursing as the sole designer on the product — from early research through beta deployment. My scope spans user research, interaction design, and cross-functional collaboration with PM, engineering, and data science.
Beyond the product itself, I act as liaison between the desktop EHR team and the mobile team — translating between two different design languages and two different EHR platforms (Cerner Millennium and the forthcoming EHRM).
Interaction patterns I designed for CAAM Nursing have been codified into the Oracle Health Mobile Framework, which I now co-own — and which supports both nursing and physician mobile applications.
The Agents
Two agents. Two distinct design problems.
Discrete Charting Agent Voice and text-driven clinical documentation for the full range of nursing charting — from vitals to wound assessment to IV management. Currently in beta at BayCare Health System.
Vision Charting Agent Camera-first AI documentation for wound assessment — the agent analyzes clinical images and suggests charting values for nurse review. Classified as a medical device.
Also in evaluation: Patient Summary Agent and Chart Search Agent are currently being evaluated at BayCare Health System, Billings Clinic, and AtlantiCare — expanding CAAM Nursing's coverage across the clinical workflow.
